Yesterday I got a phone call from one of my fellow student from KTH (Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm) regarding their project final presentation date. They are working on a project aiming on providing open source high definition video conference system. Currently I am working on my master thesis on a large-scale ERP systems integration project (a SAP Integration Process project for a large energy company in Sweden). I am still in the early phases of my research but I started to match some terms with the practical things in the real world. It is perhaps a well know truth that the role and impact of IT on today’s organizations has dramatically changed over the last decade. Across a wide spectrum of markets and countries, IT is changing it’s role from “back office” to “strategic”.

That’s why, IT understanding is becoming more and more crucial for firms and business people. Cloud computing is one of such important terms and it incorporates software as a service (SaaS), Web 2.0 and other recent, well-known technology trends, in which the common theme is reliance on the Internet for satisfying the computing needs of the users. An often-quoted example is Google Apps, which provides common business applications online that are accessed from a web browser, while the software and data are stored on Google servers. Cloud Computing, the long-held dream of computing as a utility, has the potential to transform a large part of the IT industry, making software even more attractive as a service and shaping the way IT hardware is designed and purchased. Cloud Computing refers to both the applications delivered as services over the Internet and the hardware and systems software in the datacenters that provide those services.

Anyone else wondered about the “cloud” hype? I found this paper, which explains things deeply and wanted to share it with you. You should note that the researchers although based at Berkeley are partially funded by the cloud providers themselves.

In the 1990s the computing industry shifted from expensive proprietary systems to open systems based on standard, low-cost hardware. This move changed a 20-year pattern of IT buying and deployment models. Some of the biggest IT buyers, like universities and research centers, also started to look for better, flexible and cheaper IT solutions.

National Research & Education Centers are generally start point of knowledge and innovation. These institutions must create value for the benefit of their people. To be able to do that, they need to be connected with the other source of information, like universities and research centers in the world. For example health, education, security and economy are the top priority topics for most of the countries and Africa is not an exception. To be able to increase the development level of society and create economic value for people, research institutions must be connected to internet and share knowledge and experiences.

To be able to have an cheap and flexible internet connection, PC-Based open source networking can be an alternative solution for African NRENs. Currently, a group of student at KTH, we are working on this project and try to make it 100% working solution. We are thinking end-to-end solution, which means starting from technology it self till the customer support and so on.

After I used NetBeans 6.1 IDE, I realized that while opening the IDE it is much more faster than other versions. I guess it has been improved almost %40-%50 and now it is opening time is very fast. Since I did some programing sometimes, this is really good for me. In addition to this I realized that code completion function is much more better than other versions. I also realized that memory usage is better than other versions and it does not make your computer slower. Another cool feature is support for Javascript, MySQL, Ruby/JRuby and Spring is very good and has been improved.

For me the best thing is NetBenas 6.1 IDE is opening very fast, and it was the most exciting thing for me. I really suggest you to download the NetBeans 6.1 and use it, I am pretty sure that you will like it.

This morning Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship hold a breakfast seminar about “Social Media and Internet Marketing” and it was really a good seminar.

I am very familiar to the concepts and i like blogging, podcasting, video advertising and so on. But some small advices and clues can be listed as this:

-RSS becoming really important
-Females like creating content but Males like uploading videos
-youtube, flickr, facebook, myspace are important to make a social impact
-blogs, microblogs and tumblelog are important. They make your brand or company more reachable for the customers and you let them see, read what is happening in the company, which makes them feel good and trust your brand
-and also search engine optimizations are very important

I’m also collecting material for a new whitepaper on the impact of social media.

- How did your blog/podcast/video help you connect better with customers?
- What new ideas, insights and impulses did you get from blogging, podcasting
or sharing videos on YouTube?

I’m trying to get a better understanding on the impact of social media on everyday business life and on our ability to work. Many people believe that blogging, podcasting and other social media can be huge differentiator for a company like Sun and I’m one of them. I’d like to add the data to the belief, extract the mechanisms that make it work and provide the numbers and logic to show that the belief is a proven reality.

One day, when i was first meeting with the internet it was so difficult for me to remember where should i click and what to do then. I was a little child and no english knowledge. I was always asking to my dad; “dad, where should i click now, where to write my name and password?” It was a huge problem for my dad, to show me again and again and again where to click, what to do and so on.

Imagine that you can put notes on the pages you visited before and write there small notes, about where to click, what to do and some clues about the that specific web page. After 13-14 years later now I am a computer engineer and i decided to help people who faced this kind of problems before. We developed a new technology which enable you to put sticky notes to the web pages like you put notes to your wall or post its.

Referring to the pictures in this post, you can see how easy ad fast to use it. Imagine that you are teaching using internet to to your children or a friend who is really not familiar to use internet. You can write notes about where they should click, where to write their user-names, passwords and then where should they click on.

This was only a simple scenario. We can create more and more scenarios. Imagine that you are away from home and you found something interesting on a web page and wanna show it to your wife, husband, girlf-friend, boy-friend. Basically, you can write post to the wall of the web page by using our product and then he/she can visit the same page and see what you think about any specific product, video, picture and so on.

We believe that this is a discontinuous innovation which will enable to use internet effectively. By using our product you can post notes, videos, musics and read and listen others’ notes. We will add so may other features soon but this is the best until we do the better.

There’s still a huge amount of disagreement about just what Web 2.0 means, with some people decrying it as a meaningless marketing buzzword, and others accepting it as the new conventional wisdom.

Clearly, on the consumer side of things, Web 2.0 refers to blogs, Wikis, social networks, mashups. In other words, people using lightweight applications to publish their own content on the Internet and to connect with and collaborate with others using Web-based applications.

So, where’s the enterprise angle?

First, enterprises have been trying, mostly unsuccessfully, to impose top-down knowledge management, content management and collaboration systems. And employees have been resistant to those complex, rigid systems that add extra work to their busy lives.

Web. 2.0 technologies like blogs and Wikis are different. The technology doesn’t seem “corporate.” It doesn’t require training. The software is so easy-to-use that individuals or small workgroups can start a blog or a Wiki in no time, rather than having to go through the bureaucracy of getting a new application deployed through traditional IT channels. And Web 2.0 technologies represent the kind of bottom-up community that has more of a chance to take root, grow and continue to be used over time.

For example, Serena Software is now using Facebook as its corporate intranet. Every week on “Facebook Fridays,” the company’s 800 employees are given time to spend on their Facebook profiles and to connect with co-workers, family and friends.

Where does IT fit in? When it comes to Web 2.0, IT needs to enable the technology and then step out of the way and let communities spring up on their own.

The second point of intersection between consumer-driven Web 2.0 technologies and enterprise business needs occurs when companies tap into the so-called wisdom of crowds. The most well-publicized example is Procter & Gamble which is using collaborative Web sites such as InnoCentive to soliciting new product ideas from consumers, rather than completely relying on internal product development teams.

Whether you believe Web 2.0 is a fad, whether you think it’s not applicable to serious enterprise IT or whether you’re inclined to embrace it, it’s clear that Web 2.0 is something IT execs need to address.

Some of the IT professionals recommend that IT organizations start looking for specific ways that Web 2.0 technologies can help advance the business. Start small. Use low-cost, lightweight applications. Give employees the opportunity to pick up the ball and run with it.

At 6th of december, we had a presentation about the Sun Startup Essentials in KTH /Kista campus. Mostly students group from ICT Entrepreneurship were there and Alex Breton who is one of the best entrepreneur in Sweden.

It was a nice presentation and young Swedish entrepreneurs are eager to learn more about this program.
